Mozart Melt

Mozart at once old fashioned and intellectually fresh comes courtesy of Lars Vogt and Christian Tetzlaff. The title of their album reflects refreshing honesty: “Sonatas for Piano and Violin”, not “Violin Sonatas”. The music deserves—and gets—equal partners. In the earliest sonata on this disc, K379, Lars Vogt’s light and lyrical touch in the unaccompanied first Variation of the Andantino cantabile melts right through the speakers: Exemplary for his contribution throughout. It helps that Christian Tetzlaff is no lime-light hog; the violinist accompanies or leads as necessary in K454 and 526, with a rich but controlled tone. The disc is a wonderful compliment to the singular Uchida/Steinberg recording (Philips) to which there has yet to be follow-up.
